Lotte Thrane holds a State Doctorate of Philosophy (Literature and Art History) and a first Ph.D. in Literature. She has taught Scandinavian Literature at the University of Copenhagen, at the University of East Anglia and at the University Tübingen. She has received scholarships for example from The Carlsberg Foundation, The Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Accademia di Danimarca in Rome. Lotte Thrane has curated two exhibitions on Lorenz Frølich and has published several articles about the artist.

Her latest book, the monograph "Tusmørkemesteren. Ti kapitler om Lorenz Frølich og hans tid" (Master of Twilight. Lorenz Frølich and his Time) was published in 2008. In November 2010 Lotte Thrane received a prize of honour for this book. It was awarded as best non-fiction book of the year by The Danish Writers' Association.
